Founded in 1983 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Scharoun Ensemble has had followers in Europe as well as the rest of the world for over a quarter of a century. An Ensemble of variable size, it has played under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Daniel Harding or even Pierre Boulez. From the very begin- ning, the ensemble has put an emphasis on collaboration with composers of our time. Their name refers to the architect of the Berlin Philharmonic, home of the eight musicians: the hall conceived by Hans Scharoun (1893- 1972) is unique and synthesizes innovation and traditional values, open- ing the way for new means of artistic communication. It is those ideals that the Scharoun Ensemble strive to defend with their music.
The Ensemble has been in residence at the Zermatt Music Festival & Academy since the latter’s foundation in 2005.
