Singschule Oberwallis

The Singschule Oberwallis was founded in 1994 by its current Artistic Director, Hansruedi Kämpfen. Following their training in the beginner and preparatory choirs, young singers progress to the Concert Choir.

Over the years, the Singschule has celebrated numerous national and international successes. These include the Lilly Wäckerlin Prize for Youth & Music (2012), the Canton of Valais’ 13 Stars Award (2015), recognition as Best Children’s Choir at the Swiss Choir Competition, and appearances at the prestigious Verbier Festival under conductors including Charles Dutoit (Carmen and La Damnation de Faust), Sir Simon Rattle (Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, 2025), and James Gaffigan (Carmina Burana, 2026). The choir has also undertaken concert tours and appeared at festivals in cities including Turin, Bonn, Vaison-la-Romaine and Bergen.

In 2019, both the Concert Choir and the Youth Choir won First Prize from the jury in the Elite Category at the Cantamabile Youth Choir Competition in Sion.

A particular highlight came in June with the performance of the musical A Million Dreams at the theatre of Kollegium Brig. This intergenerational production brought together every choir level—from the Beginner Choir to the Concert Choir—in a captivating performance combining singing, dance and drama.

Since its foundation, the Singschule Oberwallis has been organised as an independent association. Under the artistic direction of Hansruedi Kämpfen and with the support of professional vocal coaches, children and young people receive comprehensive musical training with a strong focus on vocal technique, choral singing and artistic expression. Thanks to its high artistic standards, innovative projects and unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent, the Singschule Oberwallis enjoys an outstanding reputation well beyond the borders of the Canton of Valais.
