Sarah Wegener captivates with compelling intensity and a timbre of radiant warmth. She has shone in Strauss songs under Mariss Jansons and Vladimir Jurowski, performed Strauss’ Four Last Songs under Daniel Harding, and brought brilliance to Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under Kirill and Vasily Petrenko, James Conlon, Eliahu Inbal, and Kent Nagano. Her “gloriously luminous, powerful voice” (FAZ) has made her a celebrated lieder interpreter, as showcased on her award winning albums Into the Deepest Sea and Zueignung.
Her debut as Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre with the Dresden Festival Orchestra and Concerto Köln under Kent Nagano was met with acclaim. She has also excelled as a soloist in Strauss’ Four Last Songs with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner.
Equally at home in early and contemporary music, Wegener has premiered numerous works by Georg Friedrich Haas, performed Sibelius’ Luonnotar with Andris Nelsons, Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion under Nagano, and Schönberg’s Six Orchestral Songs with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie under Emilio Pomàrico. Her versatile repertoire has taken her to prestigious venues and festivals worldwide.
Her discography includes works by Boesmans, Korngold, Mozart, Rossini, and Kurtág. Jörg Widmann’s Drittes Labyrinth, composed for her, earned her an OPUS Klassik nomination. Most recently, her recording of songs arranged by B. A. Zimmermann was awarded the Choc de Classica, Diapason d’Or, and the German Record Critics’ Award.
The British-German soprano studied in Stuttgart, attended masterclasses with Dame Gwyneth Jones, and has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2024.
